AGM Pretty silvery white variegated form of this tough bulbous southern African plant. Heads of cheerful lilac-purple flowers all summer and autumn. 60cm.
The flowers are slightly scented during the day and probably pollinated by butterflies (most other species are night scented and attract moths). All other parts of the plant smell strongly of garlic when crushed or cut - so don't touch them if you don't like garlic.
Tulbaghia do best in a nice warm, baking position in the UK and will not do well in cold or damp gardens. Think Mediterranean style and you shouldn't go far wrong. They also make excellent pot plants to take into a cold proch or greenhouse for the winter.
The species is from southern Africa, particularly Zimbabwe down to the eastern Cape.
Society Garlic, Wild Garlic (it isn't garlic!).
