Amazing large (thumble-size) creamy bells with rich maroon markings inside on a twining herbaceous perennial to 2.4m-3m. Easy and hardy - a good plant to confuse your friends!

Self-clinging, Codonopsis lanceolata just needs a framework of some sort or another plant to climb up.  Unusual bright green pointed leaves show up the pale flowers.

Cut the previous years growth back to ground level in late winter and the new shoots will appear in mid-late spring, don't panic if they are not up until at least mid-April!

From China Japan, Korea and far eastern Russia.  Known as deodeok in Korea where the roots are eaten.
