Striking clear red flowers with primrose yellow lips and long spurs fading to white. Spidery, showy flowers in good heads to 50cm. Good soil in shade.

Arguably one of the most showy forms of these new hybrids, 'Akane' stands out with the combination of red and yellow.  Mostly evergreen with the new foliage being speckled and splashed with maroon over an olive green base colour.  As the leaves mature and toughen up they become brighter green by midsummer.

I advise that these modern asiatic hybrids are not cut back before flowering as they can sulk for some considerable time if you get the timing wrong.  I'm happy to leave the old leaves to be overshadowed by the new flowers and foliage as they grow naturally.

Epimedium x omeiense 'Akane' is one of Mikinori Ogisu's original wild collections (along with 'Stormcloud') from Emei Shan under the collection reference Og 82001.  These are wild hybrids between Epimedium acuminatum and Epimedium fangii.

Previously known as 'Emei Shan' and often mis-spelt 'Akame'.
