Pale yellow bell flowers in early spring on branched stems clad with potato-like leaves. Brilliant purple buds emerge from the ground in late winter. Good soil in shade. 40cm.

One of the earliest herbaceous perennials to start into growth in the new year, often with the buds visible from Christmas.  The new shoots emerge purple flushed and the flowers start to emerge well before the leaves fully unfurl.  After flowering the plant does look rather like a low growing, somewhat bushy, potato plant!  A dry or hot summer will encourage dormancy from mid-summer but if the weather remains cool and damp through summer then the foliage can be retained until September or even later.

The plant forms a fat rootstock below ground and mature plants can get quite large but it does not spread.
