Maltese Cross. Brilliant, eye-searing, orange red flowers in domed heads in summer. An excellent addition to "hot" borders but keep it away from pastel pink flowers! Sun, 1m.
Compact clumps send up fairly upright stems (arching later in the season) from early summer into autumn if deadheaded. Easy to grow in most soils but better if not too dry, unusually for such a bright flower it tolerates some shade quite well.
From eastern Europe/Russia into Asia.
More common names than I care to list here show how long Silene chalcedonica has been cultivated as an ornamental plant.
