A much loved species from north America with cinnamon coloured, peeling bark, very early magenta flowers (often before leafing up) and glossy green foliage. 2m.
Slowly suckering like a raspberry but shallow rooted and easily controlled. The papery stems have a few sharp bristles but no real spines or thorns. We have Rubus spectabilis planted with Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea' for an unusual winter interest pairing.
From western North America. Salmonberry.
