A wonderful cottage garden plant but with a more unusual flower - white that blushes plum-pink from the centre. Drained soil in sun. 75cm.
Rosettes of felted grey leaves send up strong stems with masses of the white flowers that slowly develop the pink centre over many weeks in summer and autumn. A relatively short lived perennial so allow it to self seed (it comes true). Ideal for growing in gravel gardens or allow it to mingle along the edge of paths etc. Easy to pull out the unwanted extras.
Height will be dependant on moisture and nutrient availability - starve it for compact growth. Best in sandy or gravelly soils in full sun but it will grow almost anywhere not too wet, even happy in light shade.
Formerly Lychnis coronaria.
Silene chalcedonica£5.00
Maltese Cross. Brilliant, eye-searing, orange red flowers in domed heads in summer. An excellent addition to "hot" borders but keep it away from pastel pink flowers! Sun, 1m.
Silene chalcedonica var. albiflora£7.20
The rarely seen white flowered form of Maltese Cross with domed heads of flowers on upright stems to 1.2m. Clumps for a lightly shaded border.
Silene fimbriata£5.00
Clumps of strong stems topped with masses of white Campions with frilly edges in spring. Good seed heads. Part shade, average soil. 80cm.
