Briza

The Quaking grasses are fairly early to flower and quite compact plants though the flower size varies quite a bit.

The traditional Quaking Grass, Briza media, is now represented by a few forms and is a short grassland perennial plant ideal for the front of a border.

The more showy annual Briza maxima is often asked for but is very short lived so usually best grown from seed. We sometimes have a small batch of plants in late spring/early summer.  It can self-seed quite a lot in bare soil and gravel so take care where you put it!

The introduced Briza subaristata flowers later and has a more congested spike of flowers but is still a pretty grass to mix with other lower growing summer flowers.
